Where We’ve Been, Where We’re Going: Travel Trends

Let’s explore past and future travel trends together.

2024: A Year of Tourism Revival

The year 2024 marked a revival for global tourism. After years of restrictions, Italians and Europeans rediscovered their passion for travel, exploring new cultures and landscapes. The most sought-after destinations were those offering relaxation, nature, and authentic experiences. Islands, with their pristine beaches and mild climates, captured the hearts of many travelers. Art cities, rich in historic monuments and museums, continued to attract large numbers of visitors.

Trends for 2025 point to a growing focus on sustainable tourism and unique experiences. Lesser-known destinations and off-the-beaten-path itineraries are gaining increasing popularity.

Where We’ve Been (Or Wanted to Go)

According to Google’s “Year in Search 2024” report, the global travel destinations with the largest search increases compared to the previous year include the Gili Islands in Indonesia, Washington D.C., Miami, Asheville in North Carolina, and Banff in Canada. Searches also revealed a strong interest in exotic and adventurous destinations such as Southeast Asia, Africa, and South America. At the same time, there was a notable rise in searches related to sustainable and low-impact travel, with terms like “eco-tourism,” “slow travel,” and “responsible tourism” becoming more frequent.

European and Italian Searches

In Italy, searches primarily focused on domestic destinations, with particular attention to islands such as Sicily and Sardinia, as well as mountainous regions. While art cities maintained their appeal, there was a growing interest in villages and small historic towns, reflecting a desire for more authentic and less crowded tourism.

Outdoor activities and wellness also saw a surge in popularity, with increased searches for trekking, cycle tourism, and thermal spas.

Among the most-searched destinations by Europeans, Skyscanner reported significant interest in Reggio Calabria (+541%), followed by Tartu in Estonia (+294%), Córdoba in Spain (+133%), Tromsø in Norway (+85%), and Stuttgart in Germany (+70%).

Meanwhile, Google data showed Italians exploring less predictable destinations, such as Durres, Fiuggi, Spoleto, and Cadiz.

Skyscanner also highlights emerging trends for 2025. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in travel, with advanced technologies like artificial intelligence managing demand and promoting dynamic offers. Travelers are becoming more conscious of the environmental and social impact of their trips, seeking less touristy destinations and experiences that benefit local communities. The tourism industry is responding by implementing measures to reduce carbon emissions and adopt sustainable practices.

Among emerging traveler profiles are the Reset Jetters, those seeking vacations focused on wellness and health, and the Sport Mode adventurers, who combine their travels with sporting events like the Giro d’Italia or the Tour de France.

Cycle Tourism: A Growing Passion

Why choose cycle tourism? Cycling offers unique freedom, allowing travelers to discover hidden corners and experience authenticity. It’s also a great way to stay fit and reduce stress.
