How to Travel by Train with Your Bike in Italy

DISCOVER:

For cycling holidays in Italy, combining bike and train is becoming one of the smartest, most practical, and sustainable ways to explore the country. Blending two wheels with rail travel allows you to move with freedom, flexibility, and respect for the environment.

Today, thanks to a rail service increasingly attentive to cyclists’ needs, bringing your bike onboard is now a bit easier. From regional routes to international connections and long-distance trains, the Italian network is beginning to adapt to the pace and itineraries of those who choose integrated mobility. Let’s take a look at the available options.

Trenitalia Regional Trains

As for folding or disassembled bikes, one is allowed onboard any regional train free of charge, as long as it fits within the 80 × 120 × 45 cm size limit.

If you need to transport a non-folding bike (including e-bikes), keep in mind they are only permitted on trains marked with the bike symbol. In that case, there is a daily surcharge of €3.50 (or a second standard ticket).

High-Speed Trains

Bikes on Frecce (Frecciarossa, Argento, Bianca)

Unfortunately, assembled bicycles are not allowed on Frecciarossa, Frecciargento or Frecciabianca trains. However, one folding or disassembled bike in a bag (no larger than 80x110x45 cm) is permitted free of charge – the bag is mandatory.

On Italo

On Italo trains, only folding bicycles are allowed. They are treated as luggage and must be stored with the frame properly closed in the spaces provided onboard. Standard bicycles are not allowed. Italo strongly recommends placing the bike in a suitable bag.

For intermodal transport (Italo + Itabus), folding bikes may be brought onboard buses if stored with the frame closed in the designated areas. Standard bicycles and electric scooters are not allowed on buses.

Travelling with your bike on Intercity trains

Intercity Trenitalia train bike travel

The Intercity trains play a key role in the Italian rail network, with over 100 daily connections that span the entire country, linking North to South, including the islands. Routes serve major cities as well as coastal and tourist destinations and medium-sized urban centers.

For those travelling with bicycles, Intercity trains are one of the most accessible long-distance options. Each train features a dedicated bike area with six reserved spots in a specially equipped carriage. Charging outlets for e-bikes are also available.

To use this service, bike space must be reserved in advance when purchasing the ticket. Reservation is mandatory, even for folding or disassembled bikes if not in a bag. The surcharge for assembled bikes is €3.50.

Boarding is straightforward, but keep in mind that bike spots are limited and bikes must be secured in the proper racks. This service makes Intercity trains a great option for those who want to combine long-distance rail travel with cycling without giving up their own bike.
