How to Travel by Train with Your Bike in Italy

DISCOVER:

For cycling holidays in Italy, combining bike and train is becoming one of the smartest ways to explore the country. Blending two wheels with rail travel allows you to move with freedom, flexibility, and respect for the environment.

Today, thanks to a rail service increasingly attentive to cyclists’ needs, bringing your bike onboard is a bit easier. From regional routes to international connections and long-distance trains, the Italian network is beginning to adapt to the pace and itineraries of those who choose integrated mobility. Let’s take a look at the available options.

Trenitalia Regional Trains

Regional trains are excellent for local exploring and short distances. The rules depend entirely on the type of bicycle you have:

  • Folding or Disassembled Bikes: You can bring one folding or disassembled bicycle onboard any regional train completely free of charge. The only requirement is that it must fit within the maximum size limit of 80 × 120 × 45 cm.

  • Non-Folding Bikes (including ebikes): Standard, fully assembled bicycles are only permitted on regional trains that are clearly marked with a bike symbol (see the picture below). To bring a standard bike onboard, you must pay a daily surcharge of €3.50, or alternatively, purchase a second standard ticket. You can find more details on the Trenitalia Regional Trains Page.

High-Speed Trains (Frecce and Italo)

High-speed trains allow you to move quickly between major cities, but they have stricter rules regarding bicycles.

  • On Italo Trains: Italo trains only allow folding bicycles onboard. These are treated as regular luggage and must be stored with the frame properly closed in the designated onboard spaces. Standard bicycles are not permitted, and Italo strongly recommends placing your folding bike in a suitable protective bag. Additionally, if you use the intermodal Italo + Itabus service, you can bring your folding bike onto the bus if it is closed and stored in the designated areas; however, standard bicycles and electric scooters are strictly prohibited on the buses. You can review the full terms on the Italo FAQ and Assistance Page.

  • Bikes on Frecce (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca): Fully assembled standard bicycles are not allowed on any Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, or Frecciabianca trains. However, you can bring one folding or disassembled bike free of charge, provided it is kept inside a mandatory travel bag no larger than 80 x 110 x 45 cm. For official guidelines, check the Trenitalia Frecce Bike Policy.

Travelling with Your Bike on Intercity Trains

Trenitalia’s Intercity trains play a vital role in the Italian network, offering over 100 daily connections that link the North to the South, including the islands. They serve major urban centers, medium-sized cities, and popular coastal or tourist destinations.

For cyclists, Intercity trains are one of the best long-distance choices because they feature a dedicated bike area with six reserved spots in a specially equipped carriage, which also includes charging outlets for e-bikes.

To use this service, you must reserve your bike space in advance when purchasing your train ticket. Reservation is mandatory, even for folding or disassembled bikes if you choose not to put them in a bag. The surcharge for an assembled bike on Intercity lines is €3.50.

Boarding is straightforward, but remember that spaces are limited and bikes must be secured properly in the racks. More information is available on the Trenitalia Intercity Bike Service.
