ISTRIA: Croatia’s most popular and exhilarating cycling destination

Just a few hours’ drive from major cities in Northern Italy, Istria is easily accessible for trips with friends or family. Here, you will find excellent accommodation of all kinds, from large resorts and family-run boutique hotels to private rentals. For cyclists, there are over 130 Istra Bike&Bed facilities available, offering secure storage for bikes and equipment. More than 160 cycling routes await you, ranging from easy, family-friendly trails to more challenging rides, and from short loops to long-distance tracks, suitable for mountain bikes, trekking, or road bikes. On the official website, istria-bike.com, you can view all routes and download GPX files to easily follow the trails even without a physical map or signage.

In the Family&Recreation category, you will find easy, smooth, and low-intensity paths perfect for families or leisurely sightseeing tours. For more experienced riders, there are specialized routes designed for enduro and freeride, particularly in inner Istria, where you can experience the thrill of great descents. The Parenzana cycle path is Croatia’s first “greenway,” created by repurposing a former railway line revitalized in 2002 through cross-border projects. In the Croatian section of Istria alone, it spans 78 km; the route is primarily gravel and winds through small villages, tunnels, and viaducts all the way to Poreč. With its gentle climbs, it is suitable for everyone.

The Štrika is also a 20 km pedestrian and cycling path that follows the former railway line between Kanfanar and Rovinj. This trail connects inland Istria with the charming city of Rovinj and is a highly recommended section to visit. It can easily be completed in a single day.

KVARNER: A tailor-made destination

The Kvarner region—an irresistible blend of coastline, islands, and mountains—is one of Lonely Planet’s must-visit destinations and is ranked among the top three tourism regions in Croatia. From the Opatija Riviera to Rijeka, Crikvenica, and Novi Vinodolski, from the islands of Krk, Rab, Cres, and Lošinj to the lush greenery of Gorski Kotar, every landscape here is unique… and spectacular.

The territory is crisscrossed by themed cycling routes, ranging from panoramic climbs to flat stretches, making it perfect for those who love being active in nature. Don’t miss the two protected areas: Risnjak National Park and Učka Nature Park, both ideal for “bike & hike” and outdoor adventures.

And there’s more: Kvarner has been named both the European Region of Sport 2026 and the European Region of Gastronomy 2026! This is thanks to its superb Mediterranean cuisine, the famous Kvarner scampi, its pure air, and an excellent quality-price ratio. A true paradise of scents, nature, and relaxation.

KARLOVAC COUNTY: The region of four rivers

If you wish to discover local beauty and landmarks on two wheels, Karlovac County in central Croatia offers nearly 1,000 km of cycling paths. The region is defined by the four rivers that cross it: the Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica, and Dobra. The city of Karlovac itself is famous for its unique star-shaped urban layout and its abundance of green spaces and waterways. It is precisely this magical mix that makes the region a premier destination for cycle tourism.

In the saddle, you can explore every corner of the county: the flat Pokuplje region, the valleys of the four rivers, the Kordun karst plateau, and the mountainous areas of Žumberak. Cyclists will find routes tailored to every need, ranging from 30 km to over 100 km, with elevation gains from 25 m to 580 m.

One of the region’s standout features is the opportunity to follow paths that run right alongside the riverbanks. The roads connecting small villages, historic bridges, and natural areas offer itineraries suitable for both casual riders and more demanding cyclists. With its combination of untouched nature, cultural heritage, local gastronomy, and an extensive trail network, Karlovac County is the ideal destination for those looking to discover inland Croatia off the beaten path.

SLAVONIA CLUSTER: The beauty of exploring at a slow pace

In Eastern Croatia, embraced by the Danube, Drava, and Sava rivers, Slavonia is a region that reveals authentic hilly adventures. Here, cycling routes are an integral part of the landscape: they follow the rivers, cross forests and fields, and connect villages, vineyards, and protected natural areas. In Slavonia, cycling is not just an activity—it is a lifestyle that allows you to discover the region’s soul through slow travel.

Stops along the way are perfect opportunities to savor local gastronomy and traditional wines. For enthusiasts eager to explore wild and untouched nature, Slavonia offers a vast choice of experiences all year round.

Osijek, the region’s main city, boasts the highest number of cycling paths in Croatia. From the city center, just a 30-minute ride brings you to Kopački Rit Nature Park, one of Europe’s most pristine wetlands. Nearby, you’ll find Bansko Brdo, a renowned wine-growing area ideal for MTB lovers. Along the Danube, on the EuroVelo 6 route, natural and cultural attractions follow one after another: Erdut, the heroic city of Vukovar, and medieval Ilok, all nestled within an endless expanse of vineyards. Near Požega, the Papuk Nature Park stands out, offering the region’s most challenging trails alongside active tourism hubs like Jankovac and the Velika adrenaline park.

Equally captivating are the itineraries along the Drava River, featuring the Dravska Priča visitor center in Noskovci (EuroVelo 13), as well as those along the Sava River, characterized by loop cycling routes that stretch from the mountains to the historic fortress of Slavonski Brod.
