Ciclovia Meridiana: Scenic Bike Trail in Southern Italy

Stretching 295 km through southern Italy, the Ciclovia Meridiana is a circular cycling route that winds through the Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri-Lagonegrese National Park in the heart of Basilicata. Divided into two loops — a northern loop of 152 km and a southern loop of 146 km — this bike trail is a journey through nature, culture, and local flavors, following the ancient path of the Via Herculia, a Roman road once used to transport goods from the Lucanian hinterland to the Via Appia and Rome.

Ciclovia Meridiana Basilicata

A route designed for slow travel

The name “Meridiana” is inspired by the vision of philosopher Franco Cassano and his concept of “pensiero meridiano” — a southern way of thinking that embraces slowness, authenticity, and harmony with the landscape. Cycling the Meridiana means riding through 22 historic villages, lush forests, pure mountain springs, and archaeological sites, immersing yourself in a landscape rich with stories and memory.

The Ciclovia Meridiana crosses varied landscapes: beech woods, uplands, river valleys, ancient monasteries, watermills, and rock churches. Each section opens a window onto an undiscovered, welcoming Basilicata.

The route is enhanced by 97 km of connecting trails and several themed itineraries suitable for different skill levels and interests:

  • Val d’Agri River Park Loop (18.4 km), through wetland areas and wild vegetation;
  • Water Trail (28.8 km), a route designed for MTB enthusiasts, following streams and springs.

Facilities along the route are being upgraded: drinking water fountains, bicycle service stations, bike-friendly accommodations, and an interactive online map are being added and improved.

Why choose the Ciclovia Meridiana

  • A truly Mediterranean experience, far from mass tourism routes;
  • A route for everyone, with themed detours and shorter segments available;
  • A deep connection to the land, its biodiversity, rural culture, and local identity;
  • A sustainable way to discover Basilicata, supporting local communities and slow tourism values.

A national award for sustainable cycling in Basilicata

In 2025, the Ciclovia Meridiana earned second place in the Green Road Award, ranking among the best bike routes in Italy for scenic beauty, sustainability, and promotion of inland areas.

The Ciclovia Meridiana is more than just a cycling path — it’s a slow narrative stretching from north to south, restoring travel to its most essential value: the joy of discovery.
