“Exploring Calabria by bike: a journey of rhythm and wonder”

There is a Calabria that cannot be seen from a hotel window but is discovered pedal by pedal, trail by trail, with eyes fixed on the horizon and muscles moving to the rhythm of the land.

Those starting from the Tyrrhenian coasts, for example from Pizzo Calabro or Tropea, can follow the coastline to Scilla, passing crystal-clear waters, steep cliffs, and fishing villages. Here, cycling meets history, with stops at archaeological sites like Medma or Locri Epizefiri, along the Ciclovia della Magna Grecia. Days can begin with a sunrise ride and continue at sea, with sailing lessons, windsurfing descents, stand-up paddleboarding, or diving in the depths of Capo Vaticano.

On the Ionian side, between Soverato and Monasterace, the beaches open up to active experiences: kitesurfing takes center stage on windy days, while along quieter shores, adventurers can explore by kayak, paddling past Saracen towers and hidden coves.

Calabria’s Inland by Bike

Moving inland, the landscape changes. From Grecanic villages like Bova, cyclists ascend toward Aspromonte, along the dirt trails of the Sentiero dell’Inglese, through chestnut groves and stone paths. Here, one can walk, cycle, or even ride horseback through the forests of Gambarie or across the Locride highlands. In winter, the same areas transform: snowshoeing, skiing, winter trekking, and on clear days, the view stretches to Sicily, where skiing comes with a sea view.

The Parks Cycle Route and Marine Reserves

In the National Park of Sila, the plateau opens into vast meadows and lakes. Between Camigliatello, Lorica, and Sila Crotonese, the fresh air of the great forests accompanies riders along valleys and lakes following the Parks Cycle Route, with routes for road bikes and off-road trails for MTB. Lake Arvo offers canoeing excursions, sport fishing, and trekking. In winter, snow-covered pines create a picturesque setting for skiing, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

The province of Crotone also provides ideal spaces for active travel. From the Isola Capo Rizzuto Marine Reserve, with its clear waters and ideal diving conditions, to the Marchesato badlands, contrasting landscapes unfold: coastal routes perfect for cycle tourism, paths winding through olive groves and farmhouses along the Val di Neto Cycle and Pedestrian Route, and nature trails within the Capo Colonna Archaeological Park, where visitors walk among the ruins of the Magna Graecia city of Kroton, suspended between history and the sea.

Further north, in the Pollino National Park, cyclists traverse gorges and plateaus, climb the cliffs of the Raganello canyon, and navigate the rapids of the Lao River via rafting or canyoning. The Mercure and Sarmento valleys offer horseback and e-bike trails, passing through Arbëreshë villages like Civita, Frascineto, and San Lorenzo Bellizzi, where Albanian culture is preserved in language, food, and traditions.
