Cycling on the sunny side of the Austrian Alps, among turquoise lakes that reach 28°C in summer

It’s hard to imagine a better setting: a varied alpine landscape with enchanting views of idyllic lakes, all in a mild and particularly sunny climate. All this makes Carinthia a unique place in the world, distinguished by the special joie de vivre that pervades it. This blend of Alpine and Mediterranean influences, of lightness and carefreeness, forms the basis of the special atmosphere that reigns in Carinthia.

In southern Austria, bicycles can be safely taken out of the garage as early as spring. The mild climate allows for cycling trips even when the ski lifts are still running in the mountains. Routes such as the Drau Cycle Path, awarded 5 stars by the ADFC, the Carinthian Way, or the Alpe-Adria Cycle Path, which leads to the Adriatic Sea, guarantee intense experiences in a unique landscape. Hotels specializing in welcoming cyclists offer high-quality services and a welcoming atmosphere.

From April 25 to May 3, 2026, Carinthia invites cycling enthusiasts to Velovista 2026, the big cycling event that opens the season. Over eight days, participants will travel through the most beautiful Alpine lake regions – Wörthersee, Klagenfurt, and Villach – with well-structured stages and roads closed to traffic. Each day is a feast for the senses: regional cuisine, music, and local traditions accompany the stages. Expert guides and technical assistance ensure safety and comfort. Highlights include the car-free day on Lake Wörthersee, the route to the three-border triangle, and the grand finale on the shores of Lake Ossiacher See. Velovista is the ideal combination of cycling tourism, food and wine, and sustainability.
